What is Gender Identity Therapy?
Gender identity therapy is specialized mental health support for people who are exploring, questioning or affirming their gender. You may also hear it called gender therapy, gender identity counseling or gender affirming therapy. Whatever the name, the goal is the same: to offer a safe, supportive space to explore your identity without pressure toward any particular outcome.
Gender affirming therapy is not about convincing you that you're transgender or trying to talk you out of it. It isn't conversion therapy, "gender exploratory therapy" as that term is often used politically or a gatekeeping process where a therapist decides whether you're "trans enough." Being transgender is not a mental illness.
My role is to help you better understand yourself, support your mental health and walk alongside you as you discover what feels true for you. This approach reflects the position of the American Psychological Association which recognizes that gender diversity is part of the human experience and supports gender affirming care.
Who is Gender Identity Therapy For?
There isn't one "right" reason to seek gender identity therapy. It often starts with thoughts like these:
“I think I might be trans, but I've never said that out loud"
“I've known something didn't fit for a long time, and I'm finally ready to explore it”
“I don't feel like a man or a woman, and I don't know what that means."
“I am not sure if this is real or if I am making it up"
“I want to think about this without someone rushing me toward a decision"
“I have already come out and I am dealing with everything that comes after"
“My child came out as transgender or nonbinary and I want to be the parent they need”
Questioning is a valid reason to come to therapy. You don't need certainty, a label or a plan. You don't need to know whether transition is right for you and you don't have to prove that you're "trans enough." Together, we'll create space to explore what feels true for you.
How Gender-Affirming Therapy Can Support You
Exploring Gender
Many people come to therapy after years of wondering, hiding parts of themselves, or trying to make sense of feelings they couldn’t name. Whether you’re questioning, exploring, or already have a sense of who you are, therapy can help you understand your experiences and what feels right for you.
Gender Dysphoria
Gender dysphoria can feel like something doesn’t quite fit even if you don’t always have the words to explain why. It may show up in your body, your relationships or how you move through the world. Therapy can help you understand these experiences and find what helps you feel more like yourself.
Family Rejection & Grief
Family rejection can bring deep hurt, anger, loneliness and grief. You may be grieving the relationship you hoped to have, the acceptance you deserved or the feeling of being fully known. Therapy can help you navigate these emotions without losing sight of yourself.
Social transition
Changing your name, pronouns, clothing, hair or sharing your identity with others can bring both excitement and uncertainty. Therapy can help you work through the practical decisions and the emotions that come with showing up more authentically
Minority Stress
Being part of a marginalized community can mean carrying stress that others don’t always see. Discrimination, invalidation, and the exhaustion of being on guard can impact your mental health and sense of belonging. Therapy can help you process what you’ve been carrying and move through it.
Thinking Through Medical Options
If you’re considering medical options, therapy can be a place to think through your hopes, fears, questions, and values. My role is to support you as you make choices that align with your gender embodiment goals and feel right for your unique journey.
Life After Transition
Transition is not the end of your story. Many people continue navigating relationships, identity, belonging, and what it means to build a life that feels like their own long after transition begins. Therapy can support you through the joys, challenges, and ongoing process of growing into yourself.
Gender Identity Therapy in Texas Right Now
Being Trans in Texas
For LGBTQIA+ people in Texas, exploring identity doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It happens alongside political debates, shifting laws, and real uncertainty about the future. If you’re feeling anxious, scared or overwhelmed, you aren’t overreacting. When your identity is constantly being debated, it can be hard to feel safe in your right to simply exist as yourself.
Therapy isn't just about exploring your identity. It's also about making room for the stress, grief, fear and uncertainty that can come from living in a world that doesn't always feel safe. You don't exist separate from the world around you. Therapy makes room for both your inner experience and the realities you're actually navigating.
Privacy Matters
If you choose to use private pay for therapy, your sessions are not billed to insurance. That means no insurance company directing your care, no diagnosis required for reimbursement, and no therapy claims submitted to a third party. For many LGBTQIA+ clients, that added layer of privacy offers greater peace of mind.
If you choose to use insurance whether in-network or out-of-network, we'll have an open conversation about what that means and how to protect your privacy while making therapy as accessible as possible.
Whatever is happening in the world,
you deserve one place where your identity isn't up for debate.
If you’re looking for a letter of support for hormone therapy or gender-affirming surgery, that’s a separate service and you don’t need to be an ongoing therapy client. We’ll meet for the assessment, complete the letter, and you’ll have the documentation you need
Do You Need a WPATH Letter?
My Approach to Gender-Affirming Therapy
You don't have to convince me of who you are. My goal is to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are. We'll make room for whatever feels most important to you whether that's your identity, your relationships or something else entirely.
I've completed Gender ASSET 2.0, an advanced training focused on affirming presurgical evaluations and letters of support for transgender and gender-diverse people. The training follows the current WPATH Standards of Care and emphasizes informed consent, reducing gatekeeping and helping people prepare for surgery and recovery.
Many LGBTQIA+ people carry the impact of rejection, discrimination, harassment or other trauma. As an EMDR therapist, I can help you process those experiences while also supporting you in exploring your identity.
You may also find it helpful to explore our Gender Expansive Resource Guide, which includes affirming resources and community support beyond the therapy room.
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community myself, I know how important it is to have a therapist who sees you for who you are and creates space for your full story.

Gender dysphoria is the distress or discomfort that can happen when someone’s gender identity doesn’t align with how their body, the world or others perceive them. It can look different for everyone and may show up as discomfort with certain parts of your body, being seen a certain way or feeling misunderstood by others.
Not everyone who is transgender or gender-diverse experiences gender dysphoria. If it is something you’re experiencing, therapy can be a space to talk through those feelings and figure out what support feels right for you.
-
No, therapy is not required for everyone before starting hormones or gender-affirming surgery. Current standards of care recognize that being transgender or gender-diverse is not a mental health condition and do not require therapy or mental health letters as a universal step. Though some providers, surgeons or insurance companies may still have their own requirements.
If you do need a letter of support for gender-affirming care, I offer presurgical evaluations and letters as a separate service. You can learn more about that process on my WPATH letters & Presurgical Evaluations page

Finding a good gender therapist starts with finding someone who is not only LGBTQIA+ affirming but who has actual experience and training working with transgender and gender-diverse clients. Look for someone who understands that gender exploration is not something to diagnose or fix and who can support you wherever you are in your process.
When reaching out to a therapist, it’s okay to ask questions like: “What training have you completed related to gender-affirming care?” “How often do you work with transgender or nonbinary clients?” and “How do you approach clients who are still figuring things out?” You can also search directories like Inclusive Therapists, TherapyDen and the WPATH provider directory.
The right fit matters. You should feel like you can be honest, ask questions and talk about your experiences without worrying that you’ll have to educate your therapist first.
